"Any idea when you're interviewing the Haim sisters?" a message arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their extra sister."

However, there remains one problem: The author likewise longs to be Haim's newest recruit. And we're not alone. A host of celebrated fans have also coveted the honor.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy hopefuls.

In the tradition of the most iconic groups, they're a tight-knit trio. Their music videos repeatedly show them marching in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such unfettered joy you can't help but think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a guitar'," states Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That is the greatest honour. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire people to start a band."

"And thus anyone gets an invitation to be the honorary part of the family."

Grammy Nod

The band have called into a break, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I watch the lists every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the accolade resonates with the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major step," adds Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the female artists that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The album was born from a phase of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that odd liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The lyrics follow breakups and partings. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real time who they want to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to actively work on blocking the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Sound

That developed confidence required a different sonic direction – more organic and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the percussion.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Laughter

The band's candor shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their personal misadventures.

Someone left Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Path

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their standing in the industry.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an global fan base.

Yet the band will forever be their primary commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was little," shares Alana. "There is nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
