Lando Norris just pipped team-mate and championship contender Oscar Piastri for the top spot in the dying seconds of the practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The British racer, who grabbed the championship lead from his teammate by just one point after taking the win in the Mexican Grand Prix recently, outpaced the Australian by a mere 0.023s. Earlier in the session, Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver for most of the session before the sprint shootout scheduled for 18:30 GMT. Max Verstappen, the other racer in the points battle, trailing 36 points behind Norris, was classified in 17th position as his Red Bull team opted for a alternative strategy. Verstappen's team-mate the Japanese driver was the sole competitor to go off, albeit lightly, when he rotated at corner four soon after starting. The Japanese slid over the curbs on exit before sliding over the gravel trap, and was fortunate to get away with just a slight brush of the wall. Ferrari's the seven-time champion also had a spin, at the conclusion of the session, rotating twice through the fast downhill corner leading to the final corner on to the pit straight. The seven-time champion ended the session in 19th, just behind team-mate the Monegasque driver. The McLaren drivers were significantly quicker of the rest of the field, with Nico Hulkenberg's Sauber in third, over half a second off Piastri's best. Aston Martin's the Spanish driver was fourth fastest, with the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto fifth from the Mercedes of Russell and the Alpine of Pierre Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
